(Post 27) Planning Setting
The term setting is defined as 'the scenery, properties, or background, used to create the location for a film'. It is frequently thought that setting of a video is only referred to as the location alone however there is more to it than just this. Setting refers to the time, day, season, year, decade, era, scenery, background, properties of a scene and location.
For our music video we are planning to use a range of locations including Sisland Woods, Bungay Common, Shotesham Ford, evies back garden and Happisburgh Lighthouse. We have chosen these locations because they are ones we know well and know that they are what we need to create our chosen setting. We haven’t been to Happisburgh Lighthouse before but we have researched it and feel like it will accompany our other locations well and demonstrate a similar vibe. We are aiming to create a Victorian era and we are planning to mainly do this with out costumes and props. The music video will be set in autumn and winter as we particularly like the colours that autumn brings to the camera, and we think that wind will help add a dramatic effect to our video, especially at the lighthouse.
During our music video we are going to have an element of it in the past and an element in the present. The present will be one of our characters (Mike) playing the piano in a big scenic room, potentially at Hedenham House. The music video will mainly be him reminiscing of his childhood which is where we will be using our other locations and settings. We will focus on trying to make this point come across clearly (that Mike is meant to be the young boy in the video as an adult) whilst doing it subtly and without making it too obvious.
Our locations shouldn't be a problem to organise as they are all available to the public at any time apart from Hedenham House. However we have the potential to still use this house as Evie works there regularly and knows the family so therefore it shouldn't be a problem with us using a room to do some filming. Our locations are also quite remote so therefore we do not need to worry about timing our filming to avoid the general public as they should remain quiet, especially at this cold time of year. Happisburgh lighthouse is about an hours drive away from us but this shouldn't be a problem as all the people we need all fit in one car, we just need to find a day that we are all available. The other locations are al within a 15 minute drive from us to again this will mean that travel and transport will not be a problem.
We want to create these settings to demonstrate the childhood experienced by the main character who is playing the artist of our song; Lighthouse, by Patrick Watson. We are aiming to show through our filming and settings the type of childhood he experienced and its highs and lows as well as how he has changed into the person he is now. We are hoping this will all come together and show the audience in a subtle way how he grew up. This whole idea links with the style and lyrics of the song as it is called Lighthouse and we are making it look like he spent a lot of time at a lighthouse by a beach with his siblings avoiding what was going on at home. In the piece of music there is a lot of big builds and crescendos which act like big reveals and these are where we will show more depth to our story.
